50 Years of Paderborn University: A Review of the Anniversary Year 2022

Closing events attract numerous visitors to the campus

"We celebrate the future" - from the ceremony in the town hall to a concert in the mechanical engineering hall, lectures on quantum physics and a graffiti exhibition, to an original musical: in 2022, Paderborn University celebrated its 50th birthday with numerous events. Together with citizens of the city of Paderborn and the surrounding region, as well as numerous other visitors, students, researchers and staff members brought the anniversary to life with conferences, concerts, workshops, readings, lectures, film screenings, experiments, performances, sports and much more.

"2022 was and remains a very special year for Paderborn University, as we can look back on 50 years of successful development. This was made possible by the joint efforts of many people who have brought our university to life and advanced its development with great dedication. Without them, without their commitment, ideas and visions, we would not be where we are today," emphasizes university president Prof. Dr. Birgitt Riegraf. "I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to the diverse shaping of our university's 50th anniversary in so many ways over the past months," Riegraf continues.

Year-long program showcases diversity

The anniversary year was as colourful as the university itself: With numerous program items, students, researchers and staff members introduced guests of all ages to university life, including studies, research, teaching, and campus life. Together with citizens of the city of Paderborn and the surrounding region, as well as numerous other visitors, they celebrated the university's 50th birthday with conferences, concerts, workshops, readings, lectures, film screenings, experiments, performances, sports and much more.

"UPB 50 Weekender" rounds off the anniversary

To conclude, Paderborn University invited once again to a very special highlight. The tickets for the "UPB 50 Weekender", which took place on campus from December 15 to 17, were sold out in no time. Comedians Filiz Tasdan, Kinan Al and Daniel Wolfson of the Berlin group "Stand Up 44" transformed the Audimax into a comedy stage and delighted the audience. In addition, there was "stage for science" at the Science Slam, where the well-known forensic biologist Dr. Mark Benecke gave a guest lecture. Tickets for the intimate live concert in the G-Hörsaal, where both the band Jeremias and singer Paula Hartmann performed, were also quickly sold out. The "Campus Party XXL", where the cafeteria, lecture hall, corridors, library foyer and grill café turned into a unique venue with numerous DJs, was also part of the crowning conclusion of the anniversary year.
