How does Artificial Intelligence (AI) learn?

On Wednesday, 6. July, scientists from the Collaborative Research Centre /Transregio (SFB/TRR) 318 “Constructing Explainability” at the universities of Paderborn and Bielefeld invited interested people of all ages to the workshop “Teach me if you can – designing and exploring artificial intelligence”. Participants took on the role of an AI systems teacher. The researchers used practical examples to illustrate how a teachable machine recognises and evaluates patterns. For example, in one practical exercise, participants trained the machine to indicate whether or not a person was wearing a mask. It was also possible to teach the machine to recognise gestures, emotions and dance poses.

In SFB/TRR 318 “Constructing Explainability”, about 60 researchers are working towards making artificial intelligence (AI) more comprehensible. To this end, they are investigating the principles, mechanisms and social practices of explanation and how these can be considered in the design of AI systems. In a sub-project, researchers from sociology and computer science organise various workshops in which members of the public can explore AI for themselves.
