Paderborn Sociology Society Science Slam

Sociologists usually like to talk a lot and for a long time. But on Thursday 28. April, everything was different: Six scientists from Paderborn University presented their current topics and research results from sociology in ten minutes. Within this time, the slammers had to inspire the audience about their topics – and convey new research knowledge in an entertaining, clear and understandable way.

What kind of society do we actually live in? This is the core question of sociology. The science of human coexistence diagnoses the state of society and explains why things often go very differently than planned. Social problems are their passion. Sociologists are puzzle solvers of everyday life. They deal with everyday human interaction in all areas of society. At work: Why are bosses annoying? In groups: How do we agree on a common goal? In pairs: Why doesn’t he take out the rubbish? And they ask the big questions: Why do we live like this and not differently? What constraints and needs are people exposed to? How can people change the society in which they live?

Unexpected winners

In the Paderborn pub AKKA, the researchers faced an audience of 30 people – the event was completely sold out. The slammers spoke about the perception of time, markets that make the world a better place, state regulations, downshifting, masks in schools, education and social change, and social appropriation. There was a consistently positive atmosphere on stage and among the audience. As usual, the volume of the clapping at the end of the evening decided the winner of the Science Slam. But things went a little differently than expected. Since the originally intended moderator of the evening was absent due to illness, two Sociology Masters students spontaneously jumped in – and received the loudest applause of the evening for their commitment.
