“Anniversary + chemistry = celebrations with a bang!”: Christmas chemistry lecture at Paderborn University on 15. December

On Thursday 15. December the Department of Chemistry at Paderborn University invited interested people of all ages to the traditional Christmas chemistry lecture after a three-year break due to the pandemic. To celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary, the exciting experiments revolved around the equation: Anniversary + chemistry = celebrations with a bang!. It started at 6.15 p.m. in the Auditorium maximum.

It takes a certain amount of chemistry to turn a celebration into an impressive experience, emphasised Dr. Andreas Hoischen, organiser of the show lecture. In his experimental lecture, the chemist showed how the equation for a glamorous party can be solved with the help of science. After all, if ingredients or party items are missing, chemistry can provide the remedy. Hoischen provided curious ideas and demonstrated how he provides fresh sparkling water with a fire extinguisher, cooking salt under the production of flames and preserves food with the help of a freeze dryer from the laboratory. But what’s behind all of this from a scientific point of view? Hoischen answered these and many other questions with exciting experiments and experiences for the eyes, ears and taste buds at the 15th Christmas lecture at Paderborn University.
