“My name’s Mitisha Jain, I’m 27 years old and a scientist at Dresden-based research laboratory Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. I’m currently pursuing my doctorate in 2D materials. I’m from India, and originally came to Germany to do an MSc in Materials Science at Paderborn University.”

...that every day I get to solve problems, gain a deeper understanding of 2D materials and the hypothesis formulation, thereby building up know-how that can be leveraged to develop innovative electronic devices.

(2) One of the highlights of my career so far has been...
…when my research paper, which was the result of my master's thesis at Paderborn University, was published in a peer-reviewed journal for the very first time. It was a fantastic feeling. It also motivated me to do more high-quality research.

(3) When I look back on my career so far, I’d say that what has particularly shaped me has been...
...My time studying at Paderborn University. It gave me the opportunity to shift my focus from applied science to basic research. During my time at the university, my interest in the subject grew immensely, which finally lead to my decision to pursue a doctorate.

...visit research institutions in Germany and/or abroad early on in their career. By participating in various exchange programmes, students can gain first-hand experience of working in a research institution and the lives of staff members, which will ultimately help them in their career-related decisions.

...learning and working with my fellow students. I got to work with some excellent researchers in the field, and thereby gained access to a well-equipped research infrastructure.
