Networking in sport: panel discussion at the Benteler-Arena for uni anniversary

Social networks come in many forms and are a core element of our modern society. They exist not only in digital spaces, but also within companies, neighbourhoods and like-minded communities. The advance of digitalisation is currently expanding and multiplying the nature and form of these networks, with the collection, exchange and exploitation of digital data permeating almost all areas of society. Sociologists are particularly interested in the far-reaching societal consequences of increased networking. As part of Paderborn University’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the example of top-class sport was used to demonstrate what new forms of sociality are being created by modern-day networking and networks. The public were cordially invited to take part in the panel discussion at the Benteler-Arena (07-Lounge) on Wednesday, 6. July. The event, including contributions from the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB), began at 6 p.m.

A scientific keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr. Jochen Mayer from the University of Education (PH) Schwäbisch-Gmünd. Prof. Dr. Ilka Seidel from the DOSB also gave a keynote speech, but from a sports angle. Among the participants in the panel discussion were Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Risch (Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung, Stiftung Westfalen and former President of Paderborn University), Dr. Harry Bähr (Olympic Training Centre (OSP) Berlin), Martin Hornberger (SC Paderborn), Bernhard Hoppe-Biermeyer (Member of the State Parliament, President of the Sports Committee of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia) and Prof. Dr. Ilka Seidel.
